When you use the verb gustar in Spanish, you will
use it in conjunction with the indirect object pronouns (me, te, le, nos, os,
les). To help you remember how gustar works with indirect
object pronouns, remember it means "to be pleasing to someone." So to say "I like
it" think of it as "to me it is pleasing." The indirect
objects in this case answer the question to whom is it pleasing?
Example: Me gusta el chocolate. (to me chocolate is pleasing or
chocolate is pleasing to me)
To clarify to whom the object(s) is (are) pleasing to in
the 3rd person (el, ella, usted):
If you say "le gusta el chocolate" it is not clear if you mean "she likes
chocolate," "he likes chocolate," or "you like chocolate." If you want to make it clear, you can add "a ella,"
"a él," or "a usted" either before or after. ( Note that the "a" comes before "the person doing the liking" Not the "thing liked".)
Examples: He likes chocolate "A él le gusta el chocolate." or "Le gusta a él el
chocolate."
She likes coffee. "A ella le gusta el café."
You like Mexico. "A usted le gusta México."
