Testing and Grading: Tests are typically given in the Testing Center, SC-264, and are closed book and closed notes. The testing center requires the student to provide the following: (1) social security number, (2) full name which is checked against the class roll, (3) course number AND section, (4) test number or chapter number, (5) instructor name. The testing center will NOT issue the test if any of this information, along with a photo ID, is missing. Do NOT take children with you to the testing center - the people at the testing center will not give out a test when a child is present.

NOTE: One of your objectives in taking this course is to learn to solve problems. Therefore, it is entirely possible to have a test question or problem which was NOT covered in class work or in the homework.
As stated above, tests are given in the testing center. Testing is allowed Wednesday through Saturday, refer to the testing center schedule. Typically, one week's notice is given before a test. Consequently, students have one week to arrange their schedules. If anyone cannot arrange testing, that student may want to consider transferring sections or taking the course at a later time.
ANY material from previously covered topics or from previous courses may be included on any test/quiz without prior notice. When taking tests, the ONLY materials allowed on the desktop are the test paper, pencil, scratch paper (provided by the testing center), and a calculator. ALL other material including (but not limited to) books, notes, purses, book bags, coats, etc. are to be placed on the floor.
NOTE: The testing center will loan calculators. The instructor does not!!

NOTE:
All
persons who score less than 85 on any chapter test/quiz will work and submit all
problems that were missed on the test. Re-worked
tests count as homework assignments; they will show all the work only for those
problems, which were missed. Attach the re-work to the original test.
These assignments are due one week after the test is returned to the
class.
Do NOT use cellular telephones as calculators.
The
instructor does not post grades at the end of the semester.
You have four ways to get the final grade: (1) wait for Midlands Tech to
send grades through the mail, (2) give the instructor a self addressed stamped
envelope, (3) give the instructor an e-mail address and request, in writing, the
grade be sent via e-mail, (4) check the MAT-100 grade webpage.
Make-up tests are given at the end of the semester. The make-up schedule will be posted on the website and announced in class. One makeup test is permitted. The lowest graded test will be the makeup. If a chapter test is missed, that chapter test will be the makeup. If two chapter tests are missed, one zero is included into the final test grade average. ALL makeup tests are given from the instructor's office, not the class room.
Attendance: A few comments:
1.
Being tardy is a HUGH imposition to fellow students and is
a very discourteous action. Therefore, as seen above, punctuality is reflected in the
final course grade under the “Instructor Discretion” category.
2.
When an assignment is made and a due date has been set, the instructor
expects the homework or project to be on his desk at the beginning of class.
The instructor will not specifically ask for the work. Papers placed on the desk after class has started will be
considered late. Late work
generally costs one letter grade per week.
3.
If the instructor is tardy, wait fifteen minutes for every hour the class
meets that day. After the expired time, you may continue your MAT-100 studies
in the Midlands Tech library. Class
is NOT dismissed.
Student
success is related to attendance. The
student is responsible for keeping a record of missed classes and tardy dates.
In general, plan to spend two to three hours outside of class for every
hour spent in class. This class
meets five hours per week, therefore, be prepared to spend ten to fifteen hours
outside of class on MAT-100. If you
cannot spend the time, do not expect good results, or, take this course at a later date.
Homework: Homework counts 15% of the final grade. Therefore, homework can (and often does) determine whether
someone receives a higher letter grade or a lower letter grade.
That is, for some of us, homework can determine whether or not we pass
the course. The goal for this
course is to learn (some) mathematics. The
only way to learn mathematics is to work problems.
Homework is assigned to provide guidance and experience in problem
solving. The following statement is true: “Do the homework and the
tests will take care of themselves.”
Most, but NOT all, homework will be accomplished on-line. The instructor will give instructions for accessing the homework website. When doing the on-line homework, you may do/try the problems as many times as you wish. However, the cut-off date will be the due date for the assignment - typically the Monday after the chapter test.
The dates shown on CourseCompass indicate the last day on which the homework will be accepted without penalty. The actual due dates are shown on the rredware.com grade website. Homework dated between the due date and the last date for acceptance is/are penalized one letter grade per week.
Proce
When entering the classroom, turn-off and remove from sight all PAGERS, CELLULAR TELEPHONES, CASSETTE PLAYERS AND RADIOS. Do not use calculators that beep. Recall: instructor discretion counts 5% of the final grade. The same comment applies to excessive chatter during class time – i.e. turn it off.
The following is from the MTC Student Handbook: Once a class begins, students should refrain from disruptive activities, to include the use of beepers, cellular phones and watch alarms in class. If an extenuating circumstance arises when such a device is required, the student should clear their use of the device with the instructor in advance. Class time missed to answer calls may be counted against attendance.
2. Do not sharpen pencils during class. Bring many pencils - better yet, use a mechanical pencil.
3. Chapter tests are NOT given in the Classroom. Refer to the above section on testing for details.
4. Due to the way tests are conducted, we will often start the next chapter before having the test on the
previous chapter.
5. Do
not draw cartoons and do not draw graffiti on homework, class work or test
papers.
6. For those students who are employed, a good rule to observe while attending school is shown
below.

7. Do NOT bring children to class.
Anyone who brings children to class will be asked to leave. Should it become necessary, the instructor will call
security. Refer to Midlands
Technical College Procedure 7.1.3 for details.
The procedure is available in the school library.
9. People
who appear for roll call and immediately leave class will be counted as tardy or
absent – depending on the length of time away from class.
11. The instructor reserves the right to take up to one week to return graded tests and homework.
12. Suggestion: Document every homework, paper or any other assignment which you submit to the instructor. If you prefer, use the log form shown HERE.
14. Do the following: (1)
Write a memorandum or send e-mail to the instructor
stating that you have visited the MAT-100 website and that you have read the
syllabus, the information sheet and the homework procedures sheet. Be
sure to list your full name, course and section number as noted above. (2) Put a handwritten note in the instructor's mail
box in room AC-212. (3) Visit the instructor's office. If he
is not inthe office at the time, sign the sheet or white board on the door of the
instructor's office, AC-203. (4) Call the instructor at 822-3541. If the instructor is not in the office, leave a message on the
voice-mail. Accomplish these tasks within (about) one week. See
the web page schedule for the actual due dates.
15. Print a copy of this information sheet. Sign the copy stating that you have read and
understand the procedures. Submit your signed copy within the first two weeks of the semester, refer to the January schedule for actual due dates. Late copies of this signed procedure receive a grade of 50%.
