Parasites

Live at the expense of others. Some may also transmit pathogens- malaria, sleeping sickness, yellow fever, plague, lyme disease etc.

 

Fluke: Fasciola hepatica Parasitic flatworm. Complex life history. This one affects liver of sheep/cattle and occasionally people.

 

 

 

Tapeworm: Taenia pisiformis Parasitic flatworm. Scolex, Neck, Body- comprised of segments-proglottids. Each segment is an egg factory. Complex life history. This one is common in dogs intestines.

 

 

Hookworm: Ancylostoma canium Parasitic roundworm. This one infects the intestines of dogs/cats. Human ones: Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale It feeds on blood and bodily fluids and a heavy enough infestation may drain enough blood to produce chronic anemia and retardation of host growth/development.. Single female N. americanus may use 30ul/day of blood

 

 

Pinworm: Enterobius vermicularis Parasitic roundworm. This one only infects humans. May reinfect the host- anal/oral. Causes itching scratching but no disease.

 

 

Tick: Rhipicephalus sanguineas. (brown dog tick) Parasitic arachnid- 8 legs vs 6 for insects. Feeds on blood- ectoparasite. Complex life history. Egg/larva/nymph/adult May transmit disease Ixodes- Lyme disease Dermacentor/Rhipicephalus - Rocky mountain spotted fever.

 

 

Louse: Pedicularis humanus Parasitic insect. P. humanus is a body louse. It lives in the clothing and is on the body when feeding. P. capitis lives on the head. No free living stage. Chewing or sucking lice. May transmit typhus. Otherwise generally uncomfortable-itching, skin irritation, secondary infection. Sensitive to temperature.

 

 

Bed bug: Cimex lectularis Suck up food thru piercing mouthparts. This one infects humans. Only stays on host long enough to feed otherwise lives in bedding area. Not known to transmit disease. Becoming more common in hotels.

 

 

Flea: Ctenocephalides Parasitic insect. Infects mammals/ birds. This one infects dogs/cats. May be a vector for disease- plague.
