ORIENTATION
for Bio 210 Internet/Hybrid Course- Summer 2006 Note: This class was formerly called the Bio 210 Internet Course. It is not called a hybrid course because labs meet on campus. Labs will meet twice a week during the summer. All lecture activities for this course are done on-line. It is also very important that you click on each link below and read the information BEFORE completing the orientation assignment. These are specific guidelines and regulations that you must immediately and thoroughly familiarize yourself with. The rules and regulations set forth are adhered to strictly and thus it is totally your responsibility to read through them now at the beginning of the term. If you decide you do not want to be in the online Bio 210 class, you can contact Perry Carter (carterp@midlandstech.edu or 822-3548) and he will make an effort to place you in an on-campus Bio 210 class. You must make this switch, however, before or on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006. Learning Objectives and Study Guides |
Class Syllabus and Information
Bio 210 Human Anatomy and Physiology I
Lecture
Instructor
Regina Hoffman, Ph.D. - Biology Professor at Midlands
Technical College.
Email address is HoffmanR@MidlandsTech.edu or HoffmanR@MidlandsTech.com
Phone number is 803-822-3416
Office Location is Robinson 129 on the Airport Campus
Office Hours are listed on the Syllabus link on the Homepage of the course.
Lab Instructor
Your lab instructor will not be the same as your
lecture instructor and will be determined by the departmental chair. You will
not meet your lab instructor or receive contact information for him/her until
the first lab.
Note - All lab issues must be handled through your lab instructors. I cannot change your lab time or lab grade, excuse you from lab, get hold of your lab instructors for you, or prevent them from dropping you from the course. I also cannot change their teaching philosophies but I know you will have printed objectives and these objectives are the ONLY items on the lab exams. So, no matter how many problems you have with your lab instructor's teaching style, make the best of it and simply know the objectives to receive a good lab grade. Your lab instructor should give you contact info for himself/herself as well as for the Science Coordinators and Departmental Chair. You should only contact the coordinators or chair with lab issues only if you have first talked to you lab instructor about the issues.
If you have a serious conflict with the scheduled lab time, you can contact Jan Oliver (OliverJ@midlandstech.edu or 822-3548) and she may be able to place you in a different lab.
Course
Description
This course is Part 1 in an intensive study of human anatomy and physiology.
Emphasis is placed on the manner in which systems interact to maintain
homeostasis. The following topics will be covered: Organization of the Body,
Basic Chemistry, Cell Structure and Function, Genetics, Histology, Integumentary
System, Skeletal System, Muscular System, and Nervous System. Laboratory
exercises will include dissections, computer labs, models, and experimentation.
Prerequisites and Co-requisites: ENG 101
Credit Hours 4
Grading Scale:
A 100-90; B 89-80; C 79-70; D 69-60; F 59-0
Grading:
75% Lecture Grade 25% Lab Grade
You will have the following tests in lecture and they
all have equal weight. Your test grades are 90% of your lecture grade and the
assignments grade is 10% of your lecture grade. Your final lecture grade will
count 75% of your total grade for the class; your lab grade is 25% of your total
grade for the class.
Test #1 (Chapters 1 and 2)
Test #2 (Chapters 3, 4, and 5)
Test #3 (Chapters 6, 7, 9, and 11) *notice than you will not be tested on chapters 8 and 10
Test #4 (Chapters 12, 13, and 14)
Test #5 (Chapters 15 and 16)
Final Exam (Chapters 1 - 16, but not chapters 8 and 10)
Assignment Grade (Orientation, MediaPhys, Interactive Clinical Resource, and Discussion Assignment)
You cannot take a test early or make it up at a later date. If you miss a test then you will count your final exam twice. If you miss two tests, then you be dropped from the course. Even if you have a good excuse for missing a test, you will still count your final exam twice. This is how you make up the test so yes, I am letting you make it up by counting your final twice but not by letting you take the test.
If your final exam grade is higher than your lowest test grade, I will automatically drop your lowest test grade and count your final exam twice.
If you miss the final exam, you will receive a 0 for that grade unless you present written documentation that you were in the hospital or at the funeral of a close family member during the testing times.
You cannot receive an incomplete unless it is after midterm, you are passing the course with a C or better AND you provide written documentation for reason needing the incomplete. All incompletes turn into an F automatically if work is not completed within the semester following the assignment of the incomplete.
You are given a span of 3 days to take tests and the final exam so there is no excuse for missing them. Take them on the first day possible and car trouble or babysitter problems will not prevent you from missing the tests. Dates for tests are listed on the LOOK icon on the Homepage of the course.
Your assignment grade cannot be replaced by the final exam grade. Due dates for assignments are listed on the LOOK icon on the Homepage of the course. Your assignment grade is determined as follows:
The Orientation Quiz is worth 100 points and must be completed ON TIME.
Each MediaPhys and Interactive Clinical Resource assignment that is successfully completed ON TIME is worth 100 points. You have 8 of these assignments total. Yes, these will be graded so make sure your answers are correct. No, you cannot turn them in past the due dates for any reason. Do them early and you will not run the risk of not getting them in on time. If you lose your CD-ROMS, you may use the ones in the Learning Center on the Airport Campus.
Each discussion assignment that is successfully completed ON TIME is worth 100 points. You have 1 discussion assignment. Yes, I will be grading them so make sure your answers are complete. No, you cannot turn them in past the due dates for any reason. Do them early and you will not run the risk of not getting them in on time.
Your assignment grade is an average of these 10 assignments.
You will be able to check your lecture grades by clicking on the My Grades link on the Homepage of the course.
Your lab grade will be explained by your lab instructor but is determined solely by lab exam grades. If you miss a lab exam, you can take a make-up lab exam at the END of the semester. Your lab grade will count 25% of your for the class.
Very Important - Do your assignments well before the due dates. WebCT automatically disables them after their due date and I will not reset them for you for any reason. You have access to all of them now so do them NOW and not the day they are due. You will have technical problems, you will have car accidents, you will be sick, your husband will be driving you crazy, your children will be fighting 10 minutes before your assignments are due but you will not have to worry about all that if you do them EARLY!
Study Guides
Specific learning objectives are outlined for each chapter. These
objectives can be obtained from the Study Guides
link of the Homepage of the course. Study Guides are available for each chapter
and the questions from these guides will show up on your tests. YOU DO NOT
TURN IN STUDY GUIDES TO ME. They are provided only to help you cover and
understand test material. When you start saying to yourself, "I wonder what is
going to be on the test? I wonder if this figure is going to be on the test",
go to your Study Guide and you will know. The
questions on the tests come straight from the Study Guides.
You must get the text now. It will be the focus of the course. Students will be required to read and study the text in order to successfully complete the tests. This web site will only serve as a necessary supplement to the text. You must also get the lab manual now.
Text (required): Anatomy and Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function, Saladin, 3rd edition, 2003. This text comes with 2 CDs. If you buy a used text, make sure you get the following CDs or have access to them. You will use them primarily for homework assignments. If you do not have the CDs I would suggest borrowing them from a student. Ultimately you are responsible for accessing the CDs.Note - The text used for the online Bio 210 course is different from the text used for the on-campus Bio 210 course. Make sure you have the right textbook.
Lab Manual (required): Anatomy and Physiology I and II Laboratory Guide, Porter and Borg, 3rd edition, MTC. A Photographic Atlas for the Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory, Van De Graaf, 5th edition, 2003, Morton. (Any earlier edition will also work)
There are other books and atlases suggested for lab but they are not required.
Note - The lab material for the online course is the same as the lab material for the on-campus course.
Computer Requirements (required): Internet Access & recommended Java-enhanced browser.
Note - Technical problems with your personal computer are not excuses for not turning in assignments or accessing the information you need to do well in this course. Do assignments early to troubleshoot technical problems. You also have access to computers and printers at the Academic Success Centers on Airport and Beltline Campuses. The Libraries also have computers you may use.
The Beltline Academic Success Center is located in Wade Martin Hall, Room 110.
The Airport Academic Success Center is located in the Academic Center, Room 151.
The Academic Success Centers will be open the following hours during the semester
| Monday - Thursday | 7:30 AM - 8:00 PM |
| Friday | 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM |
| Saturday (Beltline) | 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM |
| Sunday (Airport) | 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM |
When you miss too many labs as determined by your lab instructor, you will be dropped from the course OR
When you miss 2 lecture tests, you will be dropped from the course OR
When you miss 4 assignments, you will be dropped from the course OR
When you do not complete the orientation assignment on time during the first week of classes, you will be dropped from the course.
If you plan to drop the course yourself, I strongly suggest you do it officially through records. Please also e-mail me to let me know you have dropped.

Tests & Final
Exam (Testing on Beltline Campus will begin Spring 2006)
Class tests and the final exam are administered on
Airport Campus and are WebCT computer-based! Here's more specific details
on tests and testing:
When: A range of 3 days will be set up for each test. You can access the dates by clicking the LOOK icon on your WebCT homepage for this course.
Note - Testing will only be done on Wednesdays (9am-9pm) , Thursdays (9am-9pm) and Fridays (9am-4pm). You MAY NOT take your tests on Saturdays. Each test will only take 25- 45 minutes to complete.
How: The test will take 25 - 45 minutes to complete depending on how quickly you take tests. Make sure you arrive at the testing center at least one hour before it closes. They will not stay past the closing time. Bring identification with a photograph. No books or notes will be allowed. When you finish the test, it will be automatically graded by WebCT. You can then look at your test to see what you missed. THE TESTING CENTER CLOSES ITS DOORS ONE HOUR BEFORE CLOSING. ONCE DOORS ARE LOCKED, TESTS ARE NOT GIVEN OUT!!!
All questions are either multiple choice, true/false, matching or short answer. Check the LOOK icon on the Homepage of the course for test dates and for hints on how to study for the tests.
Very Important - Each test is timed and you have 45- 60 minutes to complete each test. Most students complete them in 20 minutes or less. Each question is displayed one at a time and you must hit “save answer” to have it count. If you do not hit save answer, WebCT will record this as an unanswered question. You cannot go back to questions and your test will be graded automatically once you are finished. If you do not feel comfortable with this test format, you should contact Perry Carter (carterp@midlandstech.edu) and have him switch you to an on -campus class ASAP.
Each test will have 50 - 75 questions. The questions are multiple choice, true/false, short answer, or matching. Keep the following in mind when preparing for each test:
So, you basically have the test bank of questions because you have the Study Guides. You just need to make sure you know the answers BEFORE you take the test. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE ANSWERS BEFORE YOU TAKE THE REAL TEST. This course covers a lot of material so expect to spend about 9-12 hours A WEEK studying for tests.
Orientation, MediaPhys, Interactive Clinical Resource, and Discussion Assignments
There are 10 assignments total and each counts equal weight. You will submit the Orientation, MediaPhys and Interactive Clinical Resource assignments on-line through WebCT. You will post the discussion assignment on the discussion board of the class. You access the assignments by clicking the Orientation, MediaPhys, Interactive Clinical Resource, or Discussion Assignments links on the Homepage of the course. Due dates for these assignments are listed in the LOOK icon, which is accessible from the Homepage of the course.
You can turn in any of the assignments as early as you like but none will be counted past the due dates! If you lose your CD-ROMS, you should borrow one from another student.
E-mail
E-mail will play an important role in this course and
your WebCT e-mail account is the ONLY way I have of contacting
you. E-mail is also the primary way for you to contact me. You are expected to
check your WebCT e-mail account frequently.
When communicating with the professor
by e-mail always include in the subject heading:

Orientation Assignment Information
After you read the following information, log onto the course, click the Orientation Assignment Icon on the Homepage and follow the directions there.
Important
Instructions for adding summer courses is posted at the following site. Starting in the Summer of 2006, all students will automatically have their courses added to their WebCT homepages. If you currently have a WebCT homepage, you will still need to go to the following web site to access you new homepage.
Familiarize yourself with the course ASAP and e-mail me with any questions. These are the following icons on the Bio 210 Course Homepage.
§ Syllabus - This gives you my contact information, books you need, and a suggested weekly pace.
§ Study Guides - You will complete these as you read the chapters in your textbook. All concepts on the Study Guides are fair game for the tests and final exam. All questions on the tests come from the Study Guides. If you do not have time to do anything else in this course, DO THE STUDY GUIDES.
§ My Grades - This is where you go to see your grades as they are posted.
§ Assignments for Clinical Resource CD-ROM - This is where you need to go to access general directions and questions for each assignment that pertains to this CD-ROM. Notice that you will not do every topic on the CD, only those assigned.
§ Assignments for MediaPhys CD-ROM - This is where you need to go to access general directions and questions for each assignment that pertains to this CD-ROM. Notice that you will not do every topic listed on this CD, only those assigned.
§ Feedback Quizzes - Here are some practice tests that are automatically graded for you. The format of the tests will be the same as those of these quizzes. Notice that you have to spell your short answer questions correctly to receive credit. You are not required to do these quizzes and they are only recommended AFTER you complete the Study Guide.
§ Labeling Exercises - These are labeling exercises of some figures. Not every chapter has a labeling exercise. These are not required and are recommended only AFTER you complete the Study Guide.
§ Communication Tools - This is where you go to access e-mail and the discussion board. You are required to check your e-mail regularly and to use the discussion board for discussion assignments. You may use the other features if you like but they are not required.
§ LOOK Icon - Test Dates, Assignment Due Date, Test Information, etc - This link contains very important information about how to study for tests, how your grade will be calculated for the class, where to get help and the consequences of cheating. It also has the test dates and assignment due dates.
§ Discussion Assignments - This page explains your Discussion Assignment. I will be e-mailing your discussion assignment topics and due dates the first week of class.
§
Orientation Assignment – This is your orientation
assignment that must be completed the first week of classes in order to stay in
the class. If you do poorly on the orientation assignment, I would consider
dropping the course.
***Important – If you have a program on your computer that prevents pop-ups, you may need to disable it in order to see quizzes and assignments on WebCT. You may also need to update your browser. (i.e. If you are running an old version of Explorer, you may need to update it)
Important - WebCT technical problems should be addressed to Cindy Springer (springerc@midlandstech.edu). If you are having technical problems not related to WebCT then you can use the computers on campus to complete assignments and print study guides. Technical problems with your own personal computer is not an excuse for not completing work in the course on time.
Important - A very common problem with WebCT is that a student's grade is not immediately posted after they submit an assignment. I will still be able to see the work you did and can fix your grade. So you do not need to e-mail me to let me know when this happens. However, I will not fix it until about a week after the assignment is due (not completed) so please be patient.
Lab
ALL LAB ISSUES MUST BE HANDLED WITH YOUR LAB INSTRUCTOR. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT YOUR GRADE IN LAB, WHAT TO DO IF YOU MISS A LAB, HOW TO GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR LAB INSTRUCTOR OR ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT YOUR LAB.
Grading
§ Your lecture grade is determined by your 5 tests, final exam, and 10 assignments. Your 5 test grades and final exam grade will be added together and divided by 6. This average will count 90% of your lecture grade.
§ Your assignment grades will be added together and divided by 10. This average will count 10% of your lecture grade.
§ So your final lecture grade will be calculated like this:
[(Test Average X 9) + (Assignment Average)] divided by 10.
§ If you miss a test for any reason, you cannot take the test later. However I will allow you to use your final exam grade to replace ONE missed test grade.
§ If you do not miss any tests, you can also replace your lowest test grade with the final exam grade if your final exam grade is higher. I will automatically do this.
§ If you miss two tests, you will be dropped from the course
§
If you miss 4 assignments, you will be dropped from the course.
You cannot make up assignments. Turn them in early to avoid missing the due dates because of sudden technical or personal problems. Last minute emergencies will not be accepted as reasons to turn in assignments late. Do them EARLY.
Cheating
§ Cheating in any form will not be tolerated in this class.
§ The Assessment Center carefully monitors students as they take their tests. They identify which students are allowed to have notes and books while taking exams and those that are not allowed to have such items. You will be identified as a student who is NOT allowed to have notes or books while taking your tests.
§ If you are caught using notes or books during the test, you will receive a grade of zero on the test and the grade will not be dropped or replaced by your final exam grade. A permanent record of the incident will also go on your record. There is a very good chance you will also be suspended from the college.
§ If this is your second cheating offense, you will be expelled from Midlands Tech.
§ Sharing test questions with other students is also a form of cheating. Multiple forms of each test are used to prevent the sharing of questions. However, if you know anyone sharing test questions, you should contact me immediately.
§ Having others complete your homework assignments is also considered cheating. Do your own work!
§ You should contact your instructor immediately if you observe any form of cheating in this class. The information you provide will be kept confidential and if you prefer, you do not need to provide your name when you report the incident.
§ Don't ruin your credibility by cheating. A passing grade is not worth sacrificing your character or reputation. If you cheat in the classroom, you are likely to cheat on the job. Would you want a cheater taking care of you or your loved one in the hospital?
§ WebCT automatically records a large amount of information on each student that can be used to corroborate reports of cheating.
